Much as we love something shiny and new to look at, or somewhere warm and buzzing to fritter away hours we can't really spare, and we even enjoyed feeling slightly smug towards our friends in other outreaches of London, we local residents are now paying the price for having Westfield on our doorstep - parking!

I tried to visit friends in Macfarlane Road recently and for one reason or another, was driving rather than walking. After 20 minutes of driving around the streets between Uxbridge and Goldhawk Roads, plus all the side streets to the north, I concluded there wasn't a single legal parking space between my house and theirs. I had to drive home, where there was no longer anywhere legal to park and start the journey from scratch. It seems the council are having to take urgent measures to bring in tougher parking restrictions close to Westfield but if you have concerns, join the local residents meeting on Thursday at Shepherd's Bush town Hall, 7pm. I can hardly contain myself, I'm counting down the hours and and even though it's half term, neither wild horses nor small children will keep me away from the opening morning on 30 October. The Evening Standard has little else to talk about and Time Out has run a major feature, although they had the cheek to say, "
something monumental is happening to this once-barren patch of west London". I've heard of staff in local offices planning mass company-outings on Thursday - will you be there or will nothing induce you to set foot in this temple to consumer greed? Let us know what you think!

Not only is this brilliant applied directly to your plants or in your compost, but it also saves the massive waste disposal costs (lorries on the road, plastic bin bags, rubbish dumps) we're all trying to avoid.

Next time you pass a branch of Starbucks, why not go in and take a couple of bags? The more people encourage this scheme, the more common practise it'll become. Better still, why not encourage your own local café to start a similar initiative and let us know at YourLocal London how you get on?

Now in its fifth year, on Saturday 27 September, over 1000 fur-clad fun-runners will take the the streets in the Great Gorilla Run 2008. You read it right - all runners must wear a gorilla costume, courtesy of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, yours to accessorise and keep for posterity. The run itself covers a 7km stretch - you may be a bit sweaty by the end but you'll have benefitted The Gorilla Organisation and saved one of the planet's most endangered species with your fundraising efforts.

They rate Beirut, my husband swears by King Soloman's, another friend likes the ones in Naama you can take home and cook yourself and I keep menaing to try Sufi on Askew Road after it got a great review in Time Out.

We are spoiled for choice in our area - a friend who moved from Hackney to rural Yorkshire nearly wept for joy when she came to stay; for her kebabs are a dim, distant memory!

Middle-Eastern cuisine is a relatively cheap and healthy choice these days. With so many to choose from, why not go and try out somewhere new and then report back? I'd love to hear your personal recommendations and stories - both of old favourites and new discoveries. You can even bemoan the loss of now-defunct establishments if you like!

Small businesses in Shepherds Bush have received a welcome boost with the news that the police will now be using special powers to disperse groups of rowdy louts.

The new and lsquo;dispersal zone and rsquo; encompasses the whole of Uxbridge Road, between Askew Road and Wood Lane and will bring some peace to small businesses that have been blighted by anti-social behaviour problems in the past.
The zone means that police officers and police community support officers (PCSOs) can order gangs of troublemakers to leave an area immediately for a maximum of 24 hours. The scheme is being implemented by the Shepherds Bush 24/7 Safer Neighbourhood Team which is partially funded by the council.

Have your say on the future of the Congestion Charge Western Extension!
The Mayor has asked Transport for London (TfL) to seek Londoners' views on the future of the Western Extension of the Congestion Charging Scheme.
The results of this consultation will help inform the Mayor's decision on the future of the Western Extension. There are three possible options for the Western Extension they'd like you to consider. These are:

Keep the Western Extension as it is.
Remove the Western Extension and ndash; There would no longer be a charge to drive within the Western Extension; residents there would no longer receive a discount on travel in the original charging zone.
Change the Western Extension and ndash; Change the way the scheme operates by introducing account based payment, by introducing a charge free period in the middle of the day in the Western Extension, or by increasing the residents' discount to 100%.

With all these options, unless it is explicitly stated otherwise, the original central London Congestion Charging zone will continue to operate as it does at present. This initial, non-statutory consultation would need to be followed by a set of statutory processes if any changes are to be made to the Western Extension. The very earliest that the Western Extension could be removed is at the end of 2009. Some changes to the scheme would require longer implementation timescales.
TfL are keen to hear your views. You can complete an online questionnaire on their website. https://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/roadusers/congestioncharging/westernextension/have-your-say.aspx
The consultation will end on Sunday 5 October 2008.
