FREE FAMILY EVENT

Over one hundred museums, libraries and archives across the country have signed up to host activities to mark the start of the UK’s Olympic journey. As part of this initiative Harrow Museum has received funding from the Museums Libraries and Archives Council to host a special storytelling event called ‘Owl Ancestors’. Two free drop-in events will run on the 27th September starting at 2pm and 4pm. Actress and storyteller Jane Cartwright will entrance children and their families with her tales of Harrow past, with the help of some friendly barn owl hand puppets! Families will get the chance to handle real artefacts from the Kodak collection and will take their own photos of the Headstone Manor site. A small temporary exhibition surrounding the Owl Ancestors event will run in the Museum’s Tithe Barn during October.

The activities – part of MLA’s Setting the Pace programme – are timed to coincide with the handover from the Beijing Games on August 24th and the start of the Cultural Olympiad on the weekend of the 26th -28th September.

Andrew Motion, the new MLA Chair said: “Our museum, library and archive collections are a wonderfully rich reflection of the world’s complex cultural identities. It’s absolutely right that they should play this crucial role in allowing people throughout the country to take part in the Cultural Olympiad, and to celebrate the Games.”

NOTE:  The museum opening hours are weekdays (excluding Tuesdays) 12noon-5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10.30-5pm. Hot and cold drinks and light refreshments are available in the museum cafe. Entrance to the museum is free. For more information about Harrow Museum and Heritage Centre, contact Lottie Collins on 020 8863 6720.
