It always amazes me how quickly Christmas comes round. My birthday being on the 16th December I almost feel celebrated out by Christmas but somehow always find that extra bit of power to be singing Christmas Carols at 4 in the morning.I am then surprisingly over tired the next day, eating mince pies to desperately compensate for lack of sleep, champagne I find always helps and if one is feeling very saintly nothing a long cold brisk walk can not sort out.

Well that\'s me but I wish you all the happiest ups and downs for this great time of the year.

Having been back from my hols I have seemingly disappeared off the London radar. I am back. I am afraid I have been frightfully boring as I have not been well. Lots of top notch events going on so will keep you updated on that. Thinking aloud, Christmas gift tips for under a fiver, great Christmas fairs, the best mulled wine around, oh and I suppose some Halloween tips and perhaps some ideas from Father Christmas himself .
As I always like to emphasise this is a website for you so any ideas or needs please e-mail me on lucyc@yourlocallondon.com

Some Carnival knowledge to keep you in the know and make you look very clever infront of friends.

Notting Hill Carnival pioneer to be commemorated One of Britain and rsquo;s greatest post-war Caribbean personalities, the activist and publisher Claudia Jones, will be commemorated with the unveiling of two plaques this Friday (August 22).
Fifty years after the first Caribbean carnival was organised in Britain by Claudia Jones, who also helped to establish the first very first carnival on the streets of Notting Hill in 1964, a blue plaque will be unveiled in her memory on Portobello Road, W10 (corner of Tavistock Square).
This will be followed by a bronze plaque to be unveiled 200 yards further down the road at the Carnival Village in Powis Square, W10.
The event, which is organised by the Nubian Jak Community Trust, is supported by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster City Council, London Notting Hill Carnival Limited (organizers of Notting Hill Carnival), Carnival Village and the UK Centre for Carnival Arts.
Claudia Jones, also known as the 'mother of the Notting Hill Carnival', was born in Trinidad in 1915 but spent must of her adult life in the United States.
In 1955 she was deported from the US and given asylum in Britain, where she spent her remaining years working with London's African-Caribbean community. She founded and edited Britain and rsquo;s first Black weekly newspaper, The West Indian Gazette, and also became a prominent feminist and nationalist leader.
Following the 1958 riots in Notting Hill, Claudia organized a walk from Powis Square to Tavistock Square to celebrate positive aspects of Caribbean culture.
The walk, although containing dancers and steel drum players, was not an official carnival, more a cultural statement. However, a few months later she had organised Britain and rsquo;s first Caribbean Carnival which was held indoors at a hall in St Pancras. This event continued annually, until 1964 when Claudia, along with some friends, established the very first carnival on the streets of Notting Hill.
Founder of the Nubian Jak Commemorative Plaque Scheme and the Nubian Jak Community Trust, Jak Beula, said: "It is wonderful that someone who gave so much to her community, and who stood up for justice and equality, should finally be recognized for giving Britain its greatest symbol of cultural diversity and ndash; The Notting Hill Carnival."
Allyson Williams MBE, Interim Chair of London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, said: "As the current guardians of her legacy, the London Notting Hill Carnival board is delighted that Claudia Jones is being recognised in this way. We hope that these plaques will remind us all of the sacrifices that others have made, so that today we can enjoy the freedoms of a truly multicultural Britain."
Claudia and rsquo;s legacy can be seen every August bank holiday when over a million people turn out on the streets of west London to celebrate Europe and rsquo;s largest street festival
The plaques will be unveiled by His Excellency John S. Jeremy, High Commissioner for Trinidad and Tobago and the Honourable Joanna Gardner, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and Cllr Dr Harvey Marshall, Deputy Lord Mayor for Westminster.
Cllr Colin Barrow, Leader of Westminster City Council, said: "We are proud to commemorate Claudia Jones, who established the very first carnival on the streets of Notting Hill and recognised the power of the arts to bring people from different communities together."
Councillor Merrick Cockell, Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, said: "The Notting Hill Carnival is very much part of the identity of the Royal Borough and it is fitting that one of the most important people involved in its inception is recognised in this way".
The High Commission for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago said: "We are pleased to be associated with this commemorative event to celebrate the life of Claudia Jones. A true daughter of the soil, Ms. Jones and rsquo; efforts to promote our culture and bring recognition to the early Caribbean diaspora and thereby create history in the United Kingdom must be heralded."
Paul Anderson, Executive Director of UKCCA said: "The UK Centre for Carnival Arts is proud to partner with the Nubian Jak Trust in celebrating the life of one of the most influential women from the UK Carnival scene. Claudia Jones is an inspiration to everyone who has ever wanted to make a difference."
Shabaka Thompson from the Carnival Village said: "Claudia was formidable, a woman with a profound vision to use culture as the scale to balance the differences between people. Carnival Village intends to build on this vision that will establish a home for the Carnival and is proud to honour this great pioneer."

More 'Get in the Groove' for the Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival costumes take centre stage at Alexandra Palace
Notting Hill Carnival's flamboyant and vibrant costumes will take centre stage this weekend at Alexandra Palace, in an exclusive preview that will showcase some of London and rsquo;s most outstanding design talent.
Organised by the Notting Hill Mas Band Association, the two-day Grand Costume Splash is a great opportunity for artists to display their costumes in a controlled setting under the watchful eyes of an experienced judging panel. It is also a chance for Londoners of all ages to cheer their favourites on and to make a last-minute decision on which costume band they want to join for the Bank Holiday Monday parade.
The Grand Costume Splash is probably the Carnival and rsquo;s best kept secret, yet it is probably the best occasion to see the wonderful detail that goes into the largest and lsquo;King and rsquo; and and lsquo;Queen and rsquo; costumes. These larger-than-life creations often run on carefully hidden wheels and take tremendous leg power from the specially trained dancers to move them around gracefully.
Costumes will be awarded prizes across four age groups for Best King of Carnival, Best Queen of Carnival, Best Male Costume and Best Female Costume.
Michael Williams, of London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, said: "Months of preparation have gone into making these wonderful costumes and Alexandra Palace is the ideal setting for them to be seen in all their glory.
"This show is for anyone who loves the colour and visual excitement of carnival and it is ideal for families with young children. It is a unique chance to see these amazing costumes up close and in a comfortable environment without the crowds and other distractions of Carnival on the streets.
"The Notting Hill Carnival weekend finale is just around the corner and this fantastic show will get everyone into the spirit."
On Saturday the children's costume splash will take place, while on Sunday it will be the adults' turn.
The children's carnival costume splash also features face painting, mask-making and musical performances.
