Notting Hill Carnival details and places to go..............
Thank you to Seyi and Sam at Westminster City Council. These are the great events leading up to the carnival and ofcourse the actual carnival itself:
Notting Hill Carnival Events 2008
The London Notting Hill Carnival is much more than events taking place over August bank holiday weekend. Starting in July, carnival is a season of activities that celebrate the five carnival art disciplines; masquerade bands, steel bands, calypso music, static and mobile sound systems.
25 July Launch of the 2008 London Calypso Tent
A showcase of rich talent of British based Calypsonians. The ‘Tent’ is open every Friday until Friday 22 August. Hosted by the Caribbean Music Association.
Location: Carnival Village, The Tabernacle, Powis Square Time: 7pm -11pm
16 August Grand Carnival Costume Splash Children's Day
Notting Hill Mas Bands Association presents a stage show, competition and preview of costumes for Notting Hill Carnival 2008.
Location: Alexandra Palace, Wood Green. Time: 12pm - 6pm
17 August Grand Carnival Costume Splash Adult's Day
Notting Hill Mas Bands Association presents a Stage show, competition and preview of costumes for Notting Hill Carnival 2008.
Location: Alexandra Palace, Wood Green. Time: 12pm - 7pm
21 August Calypso Monarch Finals
The culmination of a month of traditional Calypso music and dance includes the crowning of the UK Calypso Monarch 2008
Location: Carnival Village, The Tabernacle, Powis Square Time: 7pm - 11pm
23 August 30th National Panorama Championship
Ten of the UK’s top steelbands, each comprising of between 40 and 75 musicians, compete for the title ‘National Champions of Steel’. There will also be a variety of stage and family activities.
Location: Hyde Park. Time: 12-4.30pm World Music Stage. 5pm to 9.30pm (National Steel Pan competition in association with the British Association of Steel Pan).
23 August Children’s Calypso Competition
Location: Powis Square. Time: 12-6pm
24 August J’Ouvert
Steelbands participate in a procession to mark the official opening of the 2008 Notting Hill Carnival. Revellers will daub paint and mud on themselves as a traditional way of driving away demons.
Location: Processions start at the junction of Ladbroke Grove and Kensal Road.
Time: 6am – 10am
24 August Notting Hill Carnival Children's day parade
Europe’s biggest celebration of music, movement and masquerade. Active participation from young people is encouraged. On the Road Junior Costume Competition (several categories including King, Queen and Best Band)
Time: 10am – 9pm
25 August Notting Hill Carnival
Europe’s biggest celebration of music, movement and masquerade.
On the Road Senior Costume Competition (several categories including King, Queen and Best Band). The ‘Soca on the move’ competition, in association with Caribbean Music Association, also takes place on Sunday and Monday.
Time: 10am – 9pm

The Garden Party
Back at The Masons for the 3rd successive year this is THE place to be before, during and after the Carnival.
There will be DJs in the garden both days from 1pm, rum punch at the bar and jerk chicken on the BBQ
