WELCOME! Another Pre-Nottinghill Carnival Event.
Notting Hill Carnival's flamboyant and vibrant costumes will take centre stage this weekend at Alexandra Palace, in an exclusive preview that will showcase some of London’s most outstanding design talent.
Organised by the Notting Hill Mas Band Association, the two-day Grand Costume Splash is a great opportunity for artists to display their costumes in a controlled setting under the watchful eyes of an experienced judging panel. It is also a chance for Londoners of all ages to cheer their favourites on and to make a last-minute decision on which costume band they want to join for the Bank Holiday Monday parade.
The Grand Costume Splash is probably the Carnival’s best kept secret, yet it is probably the best occasion to see the wonderful detail that goes into the largest ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ costumes. These larger-than-life creations often run on carefully hidden wheels and take tremendous leg power from the specially trained dancers to move them around gracefully.
Costumes will be awarded prizes across four age groups for Best King of Carnival, Best Queen of Carnival, Best Male Costume and Best Female Costume.
Michael Williams, of London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, said: "Months of preparation have gone into making these wonderful costumes and Alexandra Palace is the ideal setting for them to be seen in all their glory.
"This show is for anyone who loves the colour and visual excitement of carnival and it is ideal for families with young children. It is a unique chance to see these amazing costumes up close and in a comfortable environment without the crowds and other distractions of Carnival on the streets.
"The Notting Hill Carnival weekend finale is just around the corner and this fantastic show will get everyone into the spirit."
On Saturday the children's costume splash will take place, while on Sunday it will be the adults' turn.
The children's carnival costume splash also features face painting, mask-making and musical performances.
