The future of Kew Gardens...

I am a big fan of Kew Gardens and (as I'm a member) I try and get there once a week, or as often as I can. I just think that the work they do is very important, and it is a lovely place to spend an hour or a day. The other day, we made the most of the good weather, took a picnic along and sat by the lake. My daughter was facinated by the geese and goslings that kept walking through our picnic area and I was happy to just chill out in the sunshine!

Kew Gardens celebrates its 250 birthday this year, which is pretty impressive and there have been a lot of changes there over that time. But Kew Gardens has no plans to stand still - they have recently appointed landscape architects GROSS.MAX to draw up a master plan for a new, improved Kew Gardens. My husband heard that they are planning to reopen the gate that opens on to the Thames and perhaps have a boat service bringing people over from Brentford? I met a friend at Kew Gardens a few weeks ago who lives almost directly opposite Kew Gardens, but who had to go all the way up to Kew Bridge to be able to get in. So, I think that this would be a good idea - although I'm not sure how practical a boat service would be throughout the week - would they get enough takers to make it viable?

It doesn't sound as though it is going to be a high-speed process , but it will be interesting to see how it develops over the years. I took my dad to Kew Gardens  last year, for the first time since he was a teenager - when he had been there before, it had cost him a penny!! How times change.
