If you saw my previous post about bee-rescue, then you will know that I am an ardent bee supporter. So I was very pleased to find out (literally 5 minutes ago - I was so excited I had to share it with you all!) that after all Kew Garden's bees were wiped out, along with many other colonies across the UK, they are reintroducing around 20,000 honey bees into 2 hives in a meadow at KG. Let's hope that these bees have better luck. The bees are part of a campaign to encourage people to plant more bee-friendly plants in their gardens and Kew Gardens are also handing out 5,000 packs of seeds for people to grow in their own gardens.
I have also heard that a type of bumble bee that has been extinct in the UK since 1998 is being reintroduced from New Zealand - where it is still thriving. Yesterday a bumble bee flew into the house and I had to let it out the kitchen window and it was literally an inch and a half long - it had such a loud buzz as well - I'm sure bees were never this big when we were children!
So, if you weren't convinced last time, perhaps this will sway you to plant some more wildflowers in your gardens. Apparently though, this can be a bit of a mine field, so as I am not an expert in this area, perhaps look at the Gardeners World website, where they have a whole feature on the subject of plants for bees.
