Long live the Goose!

The Crown and Goose (sometimes confusingly called the Goose and Crown or known affectionately as the Goose, or even the Moose and Frown) is here to stay. For now. Despite repeatedly being on the verge of redevelopment - with rumours of an all night chain pub or even a strip joint abounding - this cosy bolt-hole “will be trading for a long time yet,” says bar manager Ben McDonald. Ben has been managing the Goose for just six or seven months, but is no stranger to the pub. He used to work behind the bar here five years ago and also grew up in the area, attending Haverstock School, which is just down the road in Chalk Farm.

The clientele is a mix of local residents, business people and even the odd celebrity - although I can't remember seeing any. Regulars include the local artist in his trademark beret, who can always be found adorning one of the faded green velvet bar stools and who, despite serveral long conversations into the early hours, can never quite remember who I am. Or the media types who come in on their own during the day and sit nursing a pint and a laptop, pretending to work as sun streams (yes it really did the other day) through  the windows and the bar staff play mellow songs on their ipods. Or the long-haired (now short-haired) journalist who always ends up dancing on the chairs at the end of the night to David Bowie's Starman...

There are more - it's just a case of seeking them out! I'm planning to venture far and wide (within my Camden bubble of course) in search of untried & tested pubs this summer...
