The influx of newcomers to Lewisham flows in two directions. The young business and professional people often working in Docklands and growing families priced out of Greenwich and Blackheath who seek big old Victorian houses in Lewisham's conservation areas.
The arrival of the DLR in 1999 bgan the image-change from humdrum hub for local shopping to cup and coming residential area. The best bits of Lewisham are those closest to the southern tip of Blackheath to the left of Lee Terrace. Here there are 4 storey mansions with grand sash windows and huge back gardens that are extremely well kept and would not be out of place in Kensington. The nearby parish church of St Margaret's and little backstreet pubs, all add to the quiet country feel.
