Kennington shelters a strong Portuguese community, a clutch of judges and MPs, and people who hail from everywhere from Azerbaijan to Vietnam. The area lacks a 'high street'; though several centres provide focal points for neighbourhoods tucked away off the main roads. The heart of the area gains much of its character from its historical association iwth the Duchy of Cornwall estate. The Princes of Wales have owned land here since the Black Prince had his palace here. However, most of the Duchy homes have been passed on now or sold although street names and much of the architecture remain as a legacy. Kennington is best known for its Georgian terraces, but the area also has some interesting survivals from other periods including alms houses with their Gothic porches and windows. The Oval is to the east and of course is home to the world-famous cricket stadium.
