Temple Arts Centre
Lamonte Johnson and friends have created a staging post of welcome and creativity at The Garden Temple, Brockwell Park, SE24. The former gardener's storeroom has been reinvented as place to meet, chat and view unusual sculpture and painting made by local people.
Lamonte himself has become renowned in the area for his "bicycle art". He paints and decorates bikes with and for adults and children and the first Garden Temple exhibition showcased some of his new miniature decorated bicycle models. This man loves bikes and once he gets hold of one it is reborn in a panoply of joyous colour and detail.
The Garden Temple is part of a welcome and overdue resurgence of the tradition of improvised community space in Brixton. Visit it. The cheerful art will lift your spirit and you'll probably be offered a cup of tea too.
