Blackheath was so called because it appeared a darker colour than the green fields beside the Thames which it overlooked. The busy A2 forms the boundary and carries the traffice from Central London to Dover as it has done for 2 millenia. Blackheath grew up in Georgian times and the heart of the neighbourhood so remains. Elegant terraces line the wind-blown heath, and the Blackheath village is a good facsimile of a rural one - on the shopes are smarter. The best approach to Blackheath is from the west up the steep Blackheath Hill. Take a right turn into Dartmouth Hill and you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the heath and the Village.
